What happened here? All the discussion seems to have been swamped by
spam posts...

Are we just digging through all the spam now, or has the discussion
moved?

Google. Specifically, normal Usenet service providers will close the
accounts of spammers pretty much as soon as they are reported, which
was effective at minimising spam on Usenet. Google, on the other hand,
provide lots of means of reporting spam (links on their groups user
interface and an X-Complaints-To header address) but do not seem to do
anything (at all) in response to spam reports. To illustrate, looking
at one spammer's profile:-

- we have an individual who has been allowed, over the last two years,
to post 4041 spam posts to date, is still fully active, and I
personally have reported to Google at least 111 time (that is,
reported every single post that individual has made to this group over
that period). And looking at that profile (particularly the subject
headers for the messages originating with that account) makes it
pretty clear that the account has never been used for anything but
spamming, and so is very unlikely to ever be used for anything else.

Personally I loath the idea of filtering Usenet groups. Particularly
doing something as indiscriminate as just filtering out anything
originating from Google groups. It seems unfair on the individuals who
stumble upon Google groups and attempt to use it for legitimate
purposes; they would have not idea of why they are being ignored.
However, having spent more than a year consistently reporting all
Google originating Usenet spam and seeing no apparent action on the
part of Google in response (let alone the only sensible response of
closing the spammer's accounts) I think I am going to have start
recommending that everyone some filtering policy, possibly going as
far as blocking all messages originating with Google groups.

Possibly. It is difficult to tell what the situation would be without
the spam. I have an impression (reinforced by spending part of the
last couple of weeks interviewing candidates for a javascript
programmer's job) that the number of people interested in learning
javascript (as a programming language) or browser scripting has
dropped of markedly with the rise of the 'popular' javascript
libraries.

Undoubtedly there are discussions going on elsewhere, but to some
extent the worth of any discussion is impacted by the people who are
taking part in. I won't be abandoning Usenet just yet, because I like
its uncensored, open and public nature.

Richard.

Hi,
I haven't done any javascripting for a long time but I was going to get back
into it.
What popular libraries is there around now? I have seen this JQuery thing,
don't really know what its about as I stopped checking it out as soon as it
said I needed to include another file of Javascript in order to use it.

The spam in here is quite bad but its easy to see the spammers as they
usually post about 6 messages in a row, but i hope someone can sort it out
nonetheless.

Nope. Get yourself a proper news server. I use eternal-september.org -
no spam to speak of.
